This week is a prime example, both for national democracies and the Nobel Prize Committee, which votes on its prestigious awards. "}],[{"start":33.3,"text":"The Holborn and St Pancras seat, which was previously held by Burnham’s predecessor Sir Keir Starmer, is being contested by Green Party leader Zack Polanski. Victory for Polanski would not only be a boost for his political movement after a summer of drift, but would secure him the parliamentary position needed to cement his leadership credentials. The bad news for him comes from the bookmakers, who say he is likely to lose to the Labour candidate. The concern among Green activists is that the party’s conference in Brighton over recent days, with its controversial anti-Zionism motion, has cost their leader vital face time with the voters he needs to back him in London. "}],[{"start":69.9,"text":"Quebecers will be electing a new government on Monday. The ballot could jeopardise the national leadership of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney because the frontrunners are the separatist Parti Québécois (PQ), which if victorious would secure its control of the French-speaking province for the first time in more than a decade."}],[{"start":88.65,"text":"As I said, it’s also Nobel Prize week, with the winners of the gongs for science drip-fed to us by the judging committee in Stockholm over the coming days. "}],[{"start":105.2,"text":"The standout award, however, is the Nobel Peace Prize, which will be announced in Oslo on Friday. This year’s recipient will not be the man who craves it more than anyone else: Donald Trump. However, he will have an indirect influence on the judges’ decision as they seek to avoid a repeat of last year’s embarrassment when the actual winner handed the trophy to the US president in a White House photo call. Whoever is chosen, you can expect Trump to have an opinion, making this possibly the most contentious vote this season."}],[{"start":134.65,"text":"We are in between earnings seasons, so there is a limited run of announcements this week. But there are a few big hitters to look out for. First, oil major Shell gives a quarterly update on Wednesday, no doubt bullish on the rewards of the inflated price of fossil fuels.
